Earlier in the episode, Eddie had interviewed for a firefighter position at an El Paso fire station, however the job fell through. But he needed money (especially after he used up almost all his savings relocating back to El Paso) so he ended up taking a job as a ride share driver. However, he didn't tell Chris about this new job which of course led to Chris finding out when him and his friend called for a ride and his dad ended up being the driver. That had to be awkward ride especially with the two of them pretending not to know each other.
Which led to this scene below with Chris going over to his father's new old house and they had a small yet heartfelt conversation. Okay, side note, why did the writers have Eddie buy not only a house but a total fixer upper at that. They could have had Eddie rent a house because now that him and Chris are back in Los Angeles, what happened to his El Paso house? Did he put it up for sell? And if so, did it sell? Or is he still waiting for a buyer? Or did he rent it? And ask his parents to keep an eye on the place or perhaps manage it so Eddie could have some secondary income. Eddie put in a lot of work refurbishing that house which is why I would love to know what he actually did with the place (that's if the writers will ever bring it up again).
Anyway, back to this scene, you can tell how much guilt Eddie places on himself. Because despite enjoying his job (especially when he was starting to make a lot more money) he still couldn't tell Chris about it. I wonder if Eddie told Chris the truth about trading in his beloved pick up truck for a more smaller and affordable car. But that's the thing Chris isn't a little kid anymore, so despite his father not telling him the truth, he understood the reason for the job and most likely the change in vehicle. Which is why Chris said "Because you need to save your money if you're gonna stick around", he wasn't embarrassed that Eddie was a ride share driver he just wanted his dad to tell him the truth. Eddie truly just wanted his son to be proud of him which Chris is and told him that. I love how this conversation ended with them sharing a hug and saying I love you. That's so sweet. I was just so happy they sorted this all out.
