There are two instances that involved his now late wife Shannon. First, was in the episode Merry Ex-Mas (season 2 episode 10), it was during Christmas time when Eddie was trying to decide if he wanted to let Shannon back into their son Christopher's life. At this point, Eddie had already reconnected with Shannon mainly physical but he hadn't completely let her into his life. He didn't trust her which meant he certainly wasn't ready to let her into their son's life. However, a sign changed his mind. It was when the 118 firefighters helped a soldier get to a school so he could surprise his daughter who was singing on stage. The soldier reconnected with both his daughter and wife which led to Eddie not only letting Shannon reconnect with Christopher but him also fully reconnecting with her.

Second, was in the episode Careful What You Wish For (season 2 episode 17), when Eddie, Shannon and Chris were at the beach. While Eddie and Shannon were watching their son play in the sand, she told Eddie, she might be pregnant. This had him thinking about not only the idea of a second child but also wanting to renew their vows. He wanted them to have a real second chance at being together and raising another child. But since he wasn't quite sure, he had wished for a sign. And he found that sign after an emergency call, he witnessed the love and devotion a husband had for his wife. The wife was suffering and in pain after she had opened a package that had a bomb in it.
Although, the sign had him ready for a second chance with Shannon. However, for her, she wasn't. Shannon told him she wasn't pregnant and that she wanted a divorce. This was certainly not the outcome he wanted. Unlike the first instance, this sign didn't lead to something good. And to make everything even worse, later in the episode, Shannon ended up dying after she was accidentally hit by a car.

The third was in the episode Jinx (season 4 episode 6), when Eddie reconnected with Dr. Ana Flores at an emergency call. He took the conversation he later had with Captain Robert "Bobby" Nash to heart. Because Bobby was saying for Eddie not to miss the chance for something else that could turn out to be something real. And not to be stuck in the worst moment of his life and to not be afraid to move on. He took those words as a sign to date Ana. They went on their first date near the end of the episode. For me, he should have trusted that he wasn't ready to start dating. Then he wouldn't have later on in the fifth season had a panic attack from being in a relationship he didn't really want to be in. He eventually broke up with Ana in the episode Desperate Measures (season 5 episode 3). I thought he would have been much happier if he had waited to date instead of feeling like he had to.

And finally in the episode Love is in the Air (season 6 episode 17), throughout the episode Eddie had been trying to find romance. He was trying too hard and trying to force connections. And none of it worked for him. So, once again he got advice from Bobby. This time Bobby was describing how him and his wife Athena Grant got together. However, Eddie took the information to heart which is why when he reconnected with Marisol at a hardware store, he thought that was a sign. And they eventually started dating at the end of the season finale episode Pay It Forward (season 6 episode 18). Again, this didn't work out for him because in the seventh season you could tell he wasn't really invested in this relationship. Especially since seeing Kim, a look-a-like of his late wife Shannon led him to wanting to get to know her (however not in a romantic way) which eventually led to the end of his relationship with Marisol.

What I found interesting is that only the first instance of following signs lead to something good, Shannon reconnecting with him and Christopher. While the other three ended in a rather terrible way. With following these signs, Eddie never actively made the decision he let an outside source guide him into making these choices instead of listening to himself. And in the end, it never turned out right.
The funny thing is there is one relationship he has never used signs for and that's his relationship with his best friend Evan "Buck" Buckley. With Buck he never questioned how he fit into his and his son Christopher's life. And he easily trusted him unlike how he initially was when Shannon returned. Or force feelings that wasn't there like he did with Ana or forced a connection like he did with Marisol. There was no need to look for signs to tell him that Buck was the right fit for his life. Which is why I hope that Eddie will realize soon that he has romantic feelings for Buck. Because those two are just so perfect for each other.
