Quote: Evan Buckley (+ My thoughts on his love life)

(9-1-1 season 7 episode 1: Abandon Ships)

We, uh, we broke up. I don't know why I thought it was such a great idea, dating a Death Doula.

~ Evan "Buck" Buckley, 9-1-1 season 7 episode 1: Abandon Ships

When I look back at Evan "Buck" Buckley and Natalia Dollenmeyer relationship the only thing they really connected over was death. With Natalia being a Death Doula, dealing with and understanding death was a big part of her career and life. After Buck's experience with death, after being brought back to life from dying when he was struck by lightning, I can see why he was interested in Natalia and wanted to get to know her.

I found it interesting that once she saw that his life wasn't just about his death and resurrection from it, she couldn't seem to handle or understand it. However, Buck and Natalia did further their relationship (rather quickly) at the end of the sixth season finale episode Pay It Forward. He was even asking her to help him pick out a couch (which was a metaphor for his love life). It seemed like it was the start of a new relationship for Buck but in the end there wasn't anything there for them to try to build a relationship on. Because their only connection was death.

Their relationship ended because Natalia was focused on death while Buck was no long interested in it. He was ready to start living his life as opposed to dwelling on his death. Again, death was the only thing that connected them. They met at a living funeral for one of Natalia's clients which lead to them connecting. However, it was easy to see that her only interest in was him was his brush with death. Which at the time wasn't an issue for Buck but it must have been a breaking point for him later on. Hence, the break up.

It's interesting that Buck continuously jumps into relationships especially after his love interests rejects him in some way and then they later return. Then he goes full force speeding through connections and trying to build a relationship with someone who only seems interested in him in a shallow way. This same pattern continued in the seventh season with him meeting Tommy Kinard and quickly jumping into seeing him after Tommy initially rejected him after their first date. So, I'm hoping in the upcoming eighth season, that Buck will end his current relationship and take some time figuring out what he is truly looking for in a relationship. And stop settling for people who only want him for shallow reasons.
